How Do You Get to Izu-Kogen from Tokyo?
This guide is for visitors travelling from Tokyo to Izu-Kogen, an area of Ito City on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula. It covers the train routes, fares and express charges, booking, IC cards, luggage, and the buses that leave from Izu-Kogen Station.
We used pages from the railway operator Izukyu, the bus operator Tokai Bus and the Ito Tourism Association, all read on 2026-10-04. Fares, timetables and services change, so check the operator's current timetable before you travel.
The short answer: one station on the Izukyu line
Izu-Kogen Station is station IZ06 on the Izukyu line. The line runs down the east coast of the peninsula, with 16 stations from IZ01 Ito to IZ16 Izukyu-Shimoda. Izu-Kogen is five stops from Ito.
There are two common ways to reach it from Tokyo:
- One limited express. Izukyu lists the Odoriko and the Saphir Odoriko as trains that run onto its line from JR lines. Izu-Kogen is one of the five Izukyu stations where limited expresses stop.
- Shinkansen, then local trains. Take the Shinkansen to Atami. Then take a local train south along the coast to Izu-Kogen.
What the ticket costs
Izukyu's fare table was revised on 14 March 2026. For trips via the conventional (non-Shinkansen) lines, it gives these adult fares to Izu-Kogen:
- From Tokyo: 3,170 yen, with a paper ticket or an IC card.
- From Atami: 1,100 yen with a paper ticket, or 1,091 yen with an IC card.
- From Ito: 750 yen either way.
Izukyu notes that fares for the same section can differ with the route taken and the distance used in the calculation.
If you ride a limited express, you pay an express charge on top of the fare. Izukyu's table lists charges from Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Shinagawa to five Izukyu stations, including Izu-Kogen:
- Odoriko: 2,380 yen for a reserved or unassigned seat bought in advance, or 2,640 yen if bought on board. Green class is 5,150 yen.
- Saphir Odoriko, normal season: 6,260 yen in Green class, or 8,660 yen in Premium Green.
The Saphir Odoriko has seasonal charges. They are 400 yen more in the busiest season, 200 yen more in busy periods and 200 yen less in quiet periods. Its express tickets are not sold on board, so buy them before you get on.
The two through trains
Izukyu describes the Saphir Odoriko as all Green class since March 2020. It has Premium Green seats, private Green compartments and a cafeteria. The Odoriko has used E257 series cars since March 2020.
All Izukyu trains, both local and limited express, are non-smoking.
Booking a reserved seat
For a trip that uses both JR and Izukyu, such as Tokyo to Izu-Kogen, reserved seats go on sale one month ahead. Sales start at 10:00 on the same date of the previous month.
You can buy them at JR ticket offices and ticket machines. You can also buy them at the Izukyu stations where limited expresses stop: Izu-Kogen, Izu-Atagawa, Izu-Inatori, Kawazu and Izukyu-Shimoda. At Izu-Kogen, these tickets are sold from 6:00 to 19:00.
JR East's Eki-net website can book reserved seats for journeys that connect with JR. Membership is free. Izukyu says you cannot collect these tickets at its stations. Collect them at a JR East ticket machine or ticket office before you travel.
The Shinkansen route via Atami
Izukyu also lists Shinkansen express charges to Atami for the normal season. From Tokyo, a reserved seat costs 2,290 yen, a non-reserved seat 1,760 yen and Green class 4,560 yen. The fare is extra.
From Atami, local trains run to the Izukyu line. Izukyu's Resort 21 trains, including the black Kurofune ("Black Ship") train and the red Kinme train, run as local trains between Atami and Izukyu-Shimoda. A normal ticket is enough to ride them.
Izukyu publishes a daily timetable valid from 14 March 2026. It also has separate timetables for extra limited express trains from 1 October to 30 November 2026. Check the one that covers your date.
IC cards and luggage
- IC cards. Suica, PASMO and the other cards linked with Suica work at all 16 Izukyu stations, including JR Ito. If you board on the Izukyu line, you can ride as far as the Tokyo area on the card.
- No card sales. Izukyu stopped selling Suica cards on 25 October 2021, and Suica refunds are not possible at Izukyu. Bring a card or a mobile card with you.
- Topping up. Seven stations have simple top-up machines inside the gates. At Izu-Kogen the machine works from the first train to the last. You add money in 1,000 yen steps, up to 20,000 yen. The machines do not take 10,000 yen notes.
- Unstaffed stations. Some stations have no staff early in the morning or at night. There, the conductor checks your card when you get off. If the balance is too low, you pay the full fare in cash.
- Luggage. You may bring up to two items. Each must be 250 cm or less in length, width and height added together, and 30 kg or less. Nothing longer than 2 m is allowed. Small pets in a carrier cost 290 yen per item.
From Izu-Kogen Station: Tokai Bus
Tokai Bus lists two bus stands at Izu-Kogen Station. Stand 1 is for buses towards the Akazawa coast. Stand 2 is for buses to Ito Station. There is no Tokai Bus information desk inside Izu-Kogen Station.
The nearest Tokai Bus office for this area is the Ito office. Its listed hours are 9:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 16:45.
How to ride, according to Tokai Bus:
- Take a numbered ticket when you get on. You pay when you get off.
- A screen at the front shows the fare for each ticket number. Press the bell when your stop is announced.
- Put the fare and the ticket in the fare box.
- Drivers do not give change. Use the change machine on the fare box while the bus is stopped. It does not take 10,000, 5,000 or 2,000 yen notes.
- With an IC card, you do not need a numbered ticket. Touch the reader when you get on. Nationwide IC cards are accepted.
If you change at Ito, the Ito City Tourist Information Office is inside Ito Station. The Ito Tourism Association lists its phone number as 0557-37-6105.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- Journey times from Tokyo, and how many limited expresses stop at Izu-Kogen each day. JR East's website did not respond to our automated reading. The Ito Tourism Association's access page shows its routes as images we could not read.
- A full Tokyo to Izu-Kogen total for the Shinkansen route, including the JR fare.
- Rail passes. Izukyu's global page names a JR Tokyo Wide Pass but does not explain its terms. It also describes an Izukyu Discovery Pass for overseas visitors, but the page did not make clear whether it is on sale now.
- Direct highway buses from Tokyo. The Tokai Bus highway bus page we read lists only routes from Mishima.
- Bus fares and timetables from Izu-Kogen Station, and whether buses have announcements in English.
