The Jogasaki coast and Mount Omuro after the grass burning

This guide is for visitors who want to walk the Jogasaki coast, the rocky shore next to Izu-Kogen in Ito City. It explains how the coast was formed, what you can see at three spots along it, how to reach them by train, and the safety advice for the cliffs.

We used pages from the Izu Peninsula Geopark, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and the railway operator Izukyu, all read on 2026-10-04. Paths can close for repairs or after storms. Check the latest notices before you go.

What the Jogasaki coast is

MOE lists the Jogasaki coast among the sights of the Izu Peninsula and Islands area of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It describes a lava rock coast about 9 km long in Ito City.

The coast formed when lava flowed into the sea. Waves then wore the lava down into the shapes you see today. The Geopark's pages for spots on this coast describe sea cliffs of lava, columnar joints, tide pools and suspension bridges.

Where the lava came from: Mount Omuro

The lava came from Mount Omuro, about 4,000 years ago. The Geopark says the eruption filled in part of the sea and made new land.

Mount Omuro is a scoria cone, a hill built from falling volcanic cinders. It has a bowl-shaped crater about 250 to 300 m across. The Geopark calls it the largest scoria cone in the Izu-Tobu volcano group. Its rounded shape has been kept by a traditional event of burning the grass on its slopes.

The eruption also sent a large amount of lava out from the foot of the hill. Part of that lava reached the sea and made the Jogasaki coast.

The Geopark explains how the date was found. It was first thought to be 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, based on links with ancient Jomon sites. A later radiocarbon test of charred wood gave about 4,000 years ago after calibration.

Mount Omuro is a national natural monument. The Geopark says the managers of the hill do not allow climbing on foot, to protect it. Use the lift to reach the top. On a clear day, the top gives views of Mount Komuro, Lake Ippeki, Mount Fuji and the Jogasaki coast.

Kadowaki Point: the lighthouse and the suspension bridge

The Geopark calls Kadowaki Point an easy place to see the Jogasaki landscape. Climb the Kadowaki lighthouse for a view of the coast, with Mount Omuro in the distance.

There is a shop and toilets near the lighthouse. The Kadowaki car park is about 3 minutes away on foot. The Geopark lists it as paid, at 500 yen per day, with the first 15 minutes free. Large buses cannot use it.

Hashidate: a high bridge and tide pools

The Hashidate shore is also part of the lava coast from Mount Omuro. The Hashidate suspension bridge on the Jogasaki nature trail is 60 m long and 18 m high.

Near the bridge, a path leads down to a point with columnar joints. Two tide pools sit in hollows of the rock columns. They are called Oyodo and Koyodo. You can see tropical fish such as the sapphire devil damselfish, along with shellfish and seaweed.

A river from Izu-Kogen drops over the coastal cliff here as a waterfall. The Geopark noted on 28 September 2022 that the waterfall viewpoint was closed for the time being because of fallen trees.

From Izu-Kogen Station, the Geopark gives a walk of about 30 minutes along a path beside the river. The way down to Oyodo and Koyodo is a little before the Hashidate bridge.

Une: a lookout over the lava

From the Une lookout you can see the lava that flowed into the sea along the Futo and Jogasaki coasts. Stones cut for building Edo Castle can be seen on the nearby shore.

The Geopark also names a rock here linked to a sad local story. It concerns Senzurumaru, the infant son of Minamoto no Yoritomo and Yaehime. Une is about 10 minutes on foot from Futo Station.

Getting there by train

Three Izukyu stations are close to the coast. They are IZ04 Futo, IZ05 Jogasaki-Kaigan and IZ06 Izu-Kogen.

Limited expresses stop at Izu-Kogen, but not at Futo or Jogasaki-Kaigan. Izukyu's fare table, revised on 14 March 2026, gives 190 yen, or 185 yen with an IC card, for the one stop from Izu-Kogen to Jogasaki-Kaigan. Izu-Kogen to Futo is 250 yen, or 242 yen with an IC card.

Staying safe on the cliffs

The Geopark gives this safety advice for Kadowaki Point and Hashidate:

The Geopark also asks visitors not to remove or collect fossils, rocks, minerals, plants or animals. Damaging or changing the natural landscape is banned by law.
